THE E. ANN NALLEY NORTHEAST REGION AWARD FOR VOLUNTEER SERVICE TO THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY
Congratulations to Jeff Chin for winning the E. Ann Nalley Northeast Region Award!
Jefferson (Jeff) Chin jump-started his volunteerism in 2009 when he accepted the position of Chair of the New Haven Local Section (NHLS). His first accomplishment was to upgrade communication to the local section membership from reliance on the US Postal Service to a user of email. He single-handedly managed the change-over, as well as the installation of a section website, and by 2010 the NHLS had completed its entry into the electronic age. As Chair he oversaw numerous activities, both as on-going events (e.g., National Chemistry Week) and as ones he initiated (e.g. Innovative Science Outreach Award, involvement in the New Haven Science Fair).
Before long, Jeff extended his volunteerism to the regional level by being a Session Chair at NERM 2009. He upped his involvement by taking on the position of General Co-Chair of NERM 2013 as hosted by the section, greatly increasing the visibility of the New Haven Local Section. The meeting was a scientific and financial success. Supporters of his award nomination credit Jeff with being the main driving force without whom the regional meeting would not have been a success (~600 attendees).
In recognition of his re-invigoration of the New Haven Local Section, and the immense effort extended in making its hosting of a NERM a success, the Northeast Region Board congratulates Jefferson Chin on his well-deserved E. Ann Nalley ACS volunteerism award.
Purpose: To recognize the volunteer efforts of individuals who have served the American Chemical Society, contributing significantly to the goals and objectives of the Society through their volunteerism activities.
Nature and Establishment: This award was instituted in 2006 by ACS President E. Ann Nalley as part of her presidential initiative to recognize ACS volunteerism. It was Dr. Nalley’s wish that the award continues in perpetuity at each regional meeting. The award consists of a plaque honoring the recipient with an embedded medallion commemorating Dr. Nalley.
Presentation: The Award will be presented at the Northeast Regional Meeting of the ACS in Saratoga, NY. The Awards Banquet will be held Tuesday, June 25, 2019. It is expected that the winner will attend at least the Banquet, if not talks/symposia of professional interest to him/her. The awardee will be reimbursed for expenses by NERACS as follows: (1) transportation costs in the form of the equivalent of direct fuel expense for distance traveled; (2) two tickets to the Awards Banquet; (3) up to two nights’ lodging in the meeting hotel.
